Great expectations

In the unlikeliest moments
When least expected
The most incredible things
A life
Can bring

Darkened room
Where bitter gloom
Has washed all of the air
From lungs
But the voice
On the other end
Of the line

Breathes
Life back into
Mine

In the unlikeliest moments
When least expected
The most incredible things
A life
Can bring

In the moment
Where the worlds
Stopped spinning
And nothing
Seems to be winning

Your hand
Slips into mine
And you softly whisper
It’s going to be just fine

In the unlikeliest moments
When least expected
The most incredible things
A life
Can bring

My heart beats
And yours responds
No matter the call

Whether I fly
Or you fall

The sun, the moon
The stars
The simple beauty
Of it all

In the unlikeliest moments
When least expected
The most incredible things
A life
Can bring

Bringing love

Dreary shades of blacks
Mingled
With mixed up clouds
Of greys

Remnants of endless
Autumn days

Where once
Hope drowning in
Dirty puddles

Huddled
in dark corners
And shaded hallways

Lurking
Smirking
at me

From under
Endless seas
Of colourless umbrellas

Shirking the responsibility
Of other-centred love

Now bouncing back
Picking up the mantle
Of what I ask

The task
Of bringing light
Into this heart

And love to others
By doing
What is kind
And ultimately
What is right

Blanket forts for rainy days

Blanket forts for rainy days:

Let’s build a fort
Out of blankets
Make a sport
Out of cuddles

Soaked in puddles
And puddles
Of tears
That drip down our faces
Made only of laughter

Or the miles
Upon miles
Of smiles
That fill all of the spaces
Like sunshine
In this otherwise rainy day

Where happiness
Made with love
Keeps any sad thoughts
Firmly at bay

A remedy
Full of giggles
And wiggling limbs

Where we can’t tell
Whose feet are whose
And where either
Of us ends or begins

From this pile
Here in our blanket fort
A panda standing guard
At the door
Of our secret hideaway

And where this place
Is filled with so
Much love
Here today

Juggling prayers

Always rushing
From here to there
One hand trying to act it cool
The other
Trying not to act the fool
Yet failing to keep these balls in the air
Playing the game
But never winning

Inside this head is spinning
Inside this heart is crying
Inside this mind is sinning
Inside this hand is trying
All the while time is flying

The clock is ticking
Rapidly tocking
Always faintly mocking
This twisted dance
A romance
With times twisted
Games of chance

At the end of the day
Blue fades
To shades of grey
Before the light turns
Completely dark
And I wish I’d had my say

Inside this head is spinning
Inside this heart is crying
Inside this mind is sinning
Inside this hand is trying
All the while time is flying

And as I lay here in my bed
And go over every word
Ever been said
I wonder
Is this wonder
My imagination
Or real?

If what I feel
Can disappear
Than I have so much to lose
That time can take away
And these balls
Suddenly became heavier
And now I’m begging
Dear God, don’t let them fall

Inside this head is spinning
Inside this heart is crying
Inside this mind is sinning
Inside this hand is trying
All the while time is flying

Smiles to you

A twitch
At the right
Corner of my mouth

Where you like
To take the very tip
Of your finger

And coax my smile
When I don’t
Feel like it

Except this time
Just the thought
Of you
Does the trick

Homemade spoons

Moons and moons ago
She ran out of spoons
But he kept demanding more

So she opened the proverbial drawer
And carved them out
Of flesh and bone

Bloodied hands dripping
Where she sat in the dark
Very much alone

Where in the daylight
She polished these spoons
Handed them out

In one held
Helium filled balloons
Extended in the other

To entertain her babies
Pulling off the very illusions
That anything was really amiss

Kissing foreheads and wiping noses
Holding one door open
While another closes

Wiping the nonstop tears
As the pain filled the years
Slipped away

Long since out of spoons
And sagging Balloons
filled with lies

Smiling on the train

Black outside the glass
As if teardrops
Fall down
Down
Down
The cold panes

In wild fall refrains
As I sit here
On the train

But instead of sadness
Where I’d usually descend
I find myself
Smiling at my own
Reflection

Because this smile
Brings me the miles
Back to you

And the warmth
Of your eyes
Where your own smile
Creeps
From edges of lips

Before it slips
Across cheeks
Into the beautiful seas
Of your eyes

And sparkles there
Before it shoots
Back at me

Until I can’t
Possible help
But smile back
